Getting Started
Do I need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist?
No. Physiotherapists are first-line healthcare practitioners, which means you can book an appointment directly without a referral from your doctor. During your assessment, we'll determine the likely cause of your symptoms and recommend the most appropriate treatment. If we believe further medical investigation or specialist care is needed, we'll provide you with 2-3 referral options.
What happens during my first appointment?
Your first appointment begins with a discussion about your symptoms, medical history and goals. Your physiotherapist will then perform a comprehensive assessment, which may include evaluating your movement, strength, flexibility and function to identify the cause of your symptoms. You'll receive an explanation of our findings, hands-on treatment where appropriate, personalised exercises and a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.
How long are the treaments?
MK Physiotherapy standard consultations are 45 min in duration. For women's health assessments or complicated cases we allocate 1 hour. The practice also offers 30 min treatments as a cost-effective alternative.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily and enables your physiotherapist to assess the affected area. For lower limb injuries, shorts are ideal, while a sleeveless top or loose-fitting shirt is helpful for shoulder or neck problems. If you're unsure, don't worry—we'll provide towels where appropriate to ensure your comfort and privacy during the assessment.
Treatment and Payment
How many sessions will I need?
For most conditions, therapeutic benefit is seen after 3 sessions of physiotherapy. While we usually recommend 3-6 sessions we understand that your recovery journey is unique and healing timelines differ. After your first consult we provide a treatment plan we believe you will gain the best outcome from.
Will medical aid cover?
Physiotherapy is most often funded from your day-to-day savings (MSA). Should your MSA be depleted, you will be responsible to settle your account with MK Physiotherapy.
Medical aids offer scheme funded benefits - to see if you qualify call or whatsapp us, we are happy to advise.
What is the cost of a physiotherapy session?
MK Physiotherapy charges medical aid rates according to your scheme. Standard consultations are 45 min. Treatment plans can be arranged according to your budget.
Can you claim directly from my medical aid?
Yes. We submit claims electronically to most South African medical aid schemes, making the process as simple and convenient as possible. While many claims are paid directly by your medical aid, payment depends on your available benefits, medical aid rules and your specific plan. If there is any shortfall or your benefits have been exhausted, we'll discuss this with you before or during your treatment
