Postnatal Physiotherapy

Physiotherapist providing postnatal rehabilitation, breastfeeding support after childbirth.

Supporting breastfeeding & helping you recover after childbirth

Bringing a new baby into the world is life-changing, but recovery doesn't end once your baby is born.

Whether you've had a vaginal delivery or Caesarean section, your body has undergone significant physical changes.

Postnatal physiotherapy focuses on helping you recover safely, restore strength, improve pelvic floor function and return to the activities that matter most—from lifting your baby and feeding comfortably to returning to exercise and feeling like yourself again.

How can physiotherapy help after childbirth?

Postnatal physiotherapy supports your body's recovery after pregnancy and birth. Treatment may include pelvic floor and abdominal rehabilitation, hands-on treatment, scar management, breastfeeding support, movement advice and progressive strengthening. Your treatment is tailored to how you gave birth, the symptoms you're experiencing and the activities you'd like to return to.

Mother breastfeeding her baby with support for engorgement, mastitis and breastfeeding discomfort.

Breastfeeding, Engorgement & Mastitis Support

Breastfeeding can be physically demanding, particularly during the early weeks when your milk supply is establishing. Engorgement, breast inflammation and damaged or cracked nipples can make feeding painful and sometimes leave you unsure where to turn for help.

Physiotherapy can form part of your breastfeeding support by helping to manage breast discomfort and swelling, unblocking milk ducts, providing guidance around appropriate movement and positioning, and using suitable treatment modalities to support tissue healing.

Where symptoms suggest mastitis or another condition requiring medical or lactation management, we can help guide you towards the appropriate care.

We can help with:

  • breast engorgement

  • breast discomfort and inflammation

  • blocked or narrowed ducts

  • cracked nipples

  • feeding-related pain

  • supportive care during mastitis recovery

Pelvic floor anatomy representing postnatal pelvic floor recovery after childbirth.

Pelvic Floor Recovery

Your pelvic floor changes throughout pregnancy and childbirth - and this applies whether you delivered vaginally or by Caesarean section. After birth, you may notice leaking, urgency, heaviness or simply feel that your pelvic floor isn't functioning as it did before.

Postnatal physiotherapy can assess how your pelvic floor contracts, relaxes and works together with your breathing and abdominal muscles.

Treatment is individualised because pelvic floor recovery isn't always about simply doing more Kegels.

We can help with:

  • bladder leakage

  • urinary urgency

  • pelvic heaviness

  • prolapse symptoms

  • pelvic floor weakness or overactivity

  • restoring pelvic floor coordination after childbirth

Postnatal abdominal treatment for diastasis recti and core muscle recovery.

Abdominal Separation & Core Recovery

Your abdominal wall stretches to accommodate your growing baby, and some degree of separation between the abdominal muscles - known as diastasis recti - is common during and after pregnancy.

Rather than focusing only on the size of the "gap", physiotherapy looks at how your abdominal wall functions during breathing, movement and everyday activities. We can then progressively rebuild strength and coordination between your abdominal muscles, pelvic floor and the rest of your body.

We can help with:

  • diastasis recti

  • abdominal weakness

  • abdominal doming

  • reduced core control

  • rebuilding abdominal strength after pregnancy

Postnatal physiotherapy for Caesarean and birth-related scar recovery

Caesarean & Birth-Related Scar Recovery

Whether you've had a Caesarean section, episiotomy or perineal tear you are prone to scar tissue, which can sometimes remain sensitive, tight or uncomfortable after the initial wound has healed.

Physiotherapy can help restore comfortable movement and address scar and surrounding soft-tissue restrictions where appropriate.

Following Caesarean delivery, rehabilitation can also progressively restore abdominal strength and confidence with lifting, walking and everyday movement.

We can help with:

  • Caesarean scars

  • abdominal discomfort, scar sensitivity or restriction

  • episiotomy and perineal scar discomfort

  • rebuilding movement and strength following delivery.

Mother experiencing back and neck pain associated with feeding and caring for her baby

Back, Neck & Feeding-Related Pain

Looking after a baby can be surprisingly demanding on your body. Feeding, rocking, carrying, bending over a cot, lifting a car seat and spending hours looking down at your baby can contribute to pain even when you've never experienced these problems before.

Physiotherapy can treat the painful area while also looking at the positions and repetitive movements contributing to your symptoms, helping you find more comfortable ways to feed, carry and care for your baby.

We can help with:

  • neck and shoulder pain

  • upper and lower back pain

  • wrist and hand pain

  • muscle tension

  • feeding-related discomfort

  • pain associated with lifting or carrying your baby.

Postnatal return to running and exercise with progressive strength rehabilitation.

Returning to Exercise & Running

Getting back to exercise after having a baby isn't simply about waiting a set number of weeks. Your recovery depends on your pregnancy, type of delivery, healing, pelvic floor and abdominal function, strength, symptoms and what you'd ultimately like your body to do.

Physiotherapy can assess where you are in your recovery and progressively rebuild the strength, control and capacity required for your chosen activity - whether that's walking without discomfort, returning to the gym, lifting weights, running or competitive sport.

We can help with:

  • returning to walking, running and sport

  • gym and strength training

  • impact exercise

  • rebuilding fitness

  • developing confidence in your body after childbirth.
