How can physiotherapy support your health as a woman?
Women’s health physiotherapy looks at how the pelvic floor, muscles, joints and surrounding tissues work together and how changes throughout life may affect your comfort and function. Treatment may include pelvic floor rehabilitation, hands-on therapy, targeted exercise, education and practical strategies to help you manage symptoms and feel more confident in your body.

Bladder Control & Urinary Leakage
Leaking urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh, run or exercise is common, but it isn't something you simply have to live with. Other bladder problems, such as urgency or needing to urinate frequently, can also interfere with work, exercise, travel and everyday life.
Physiotherapy can assess how your pelvic floor muscles contract, relax and coordinate with your breathing and abdominal muscles.
Treatment is then tailored to the type of bladder symptoms you're experiencing rather than simply prescribing generic pelvic floor exercises.
We can help with:
-
stress urinary incontinence
-
urgency
-
urge incontinence
-
mixed incontinence
-
urinary frequency
-
pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.

Painful Intercourse & Pelvic Floor Tension
Pain during or after intercourse shouldn't simply be dismissed as something you need to tolerate. Pain can have several causes, including pelvic floor muscle overactivity, tissue sensitivity, hormonal changes, scar tissue or an underlying gynaecological condition.
Where musculoskeletal or pelvic floor factors are involved, physiotherapy may include education, relaxation and breathing strategies, pelvic floor retraining and appropriate hands-on treatment, always with your consent and at a pace you are comfortable with.
We can help with:
-
pain during intercourse (dyspareunia)
-
pelvic floor overactivity
-
vaginal muscle tension
-
pain with penetration
-
pelvic floor relaxation.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse & Pelvic Heaviness
A feeling of heaviness, pressure or a bulge in the vagina can occur when the support structures of the pelvic organs become less effective. Symptoms may become more noticeable with prolonged standing, exercise, lifting or towards the end of the day.
Physiotherapy can help improve pelvic floor function, teach strategies for managing pressure during everyday activities and guide exercise so that you can remain active rather than becoming afraid of movement.
We can help with:
-
pelvic heaviness or pressure
-
symptoms of bladder, uterine or bowel prolapse
-
pelvic floor weakness
-
lifting strategies
-
adapting exercise around prolapse symptoms.

Endometriosis & Persistent Pelvic Symptoms
Endometriosis itself requires appropriate medical and gynaecological management, but the effects of living with persistent pelvic pain can extend into the muscles, pelvic floor, movement and everyday function.
Physiotherapy doesn't treat or remove endometriosis. Instead, it can form part of multidisciplinary care by addressing associated pelvic floor dysfunction, musculoskeletal pain, movement difficulties and strategies for managing persistent symptoms.
We can help with:
-
endometriosis-associated pelvic pain
-
pelvic floor muscle tension
-
abdominal and lower-back pain
-
painful movement
-
returning to comfortable activity.

Pelvic Pain
Pelvic pain can be difficult to talk about and may affect sitting, exercise, work, bladder or bowel function and everyday quality of life. Importantly, pelvic pain isn't always caused by weakness - sometimes the pelvic floor muscles are actually tense, overactive or painful.
A physiotherapy assessment looks beyond the painful area to consider pelvic floor function, muscles and joints around the pelvis and hips, breathing, movement and other factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.
We can help with:
-
persistent pelvic pain
-
pelvic floor muscle tension
-
vulval or vaginal discomfort
-
coccyx pain
-
lower abdominal pain
-
musculoskeletal pelvic and hip pain.

Menopause, Healthy Ageing & Pelvic Health
Changes around perimenopause and menopause can affect muscles, bones, pelvic tissues and bladder function. Women may notice new urinary symptoms, changes in pelvic floor function, reduced strength or greater difficulty maintaining the activities they previously enjoyed.
Physiotherapy can help maintain pelvic floor function, strength, mobility and confidence with exercise as your body changes — with treatment tailored to your symptoms and goals.
We can help with:
-
bladder symptoms
-
pelvic floor weakness
-
pelvic heaviness
-
maintaining muscle and bone strength
-
safe strength training
-
balance and staying active through menopause and beyond.
