Pregnancy is an exciting journey, but the physical changes your body experiences can sometimes make everyday activities more challenging.
As your baby grows, it's common to experience back pain, pelvic discomfort, rib pain or changes in posture that affect your comfort and confidence.

How can physiotherapy help during pregnancy?
Pregnancy physiotherapy is tailored to your changing body and may include hands-on treatment, targeted strengthening and mobility exercises, pelvic floor rehabilitation, movement and posture advice, and guidance on safely staying active. Treatment is adapted throughout each stage of pregnancy according to your symptoms, goals and individual needs.

Back & Pelvic Girdle Pain
Back and pelvic pain are common during pregnancy as your body adapts to changes in load, movement and the growing baby. You may notice pain when walking, climbing stairs, turning in bed, standing on one leg while getting dressed or getting in and out of the car.
Physiotherapy can help identify the structures and movements contributing to your symptoms and may include hands-on treatment, movement modification, supportive strategies and targeted strengthening.
We can help with:
-
lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain (PGP)
-
sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain
-
pubic symphysis pain
-
pelvic instability and difficulty with everyday movement.

Staying Active During Pregnancy
For most uncomplicated pregnancies, staying physically active is encouraged and can provide important health benefits. However, as pregnancy progresses, you may be unsure whether you should continue running, lifting weights, attending the gym or doing your usual exercise.
We can help you adapt your exercise to your changing body, manage symptoms and maintain strength and mobility throughout pregnancy while taking your individual pregnancy and medical circumstances into account.
We can help with:
-
pregnancy exercise, strength training
-
running and gym modifications
-
mobility
-
maintaining fitness
-
returning to activity after pregnancy-related pain.

Pelvic Floor Health
Your pelvic floor supports your bladder, bowel and pelvic organs and experiences increasing demands throughout pregnancy. Pregnancy is therefore an ideal time to become more aware of these muscles - not simply learning how to strengthen them, but also how to relax and coordinate them appropriately.
Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help manage existing symptoms and prepare your pelvic floor for the demands of pregnancy and childbirth.
We can help with:
-
bladder leakage
-
urinary urgency
-
pelvic heaviness
-
pelvic floor weakness or overactivity
-
pelvic floor awareness and preparation for birth.

Preparing Your Body for Birth
Birth places significant physical demands on the body. Physiotherapy can help you understand your pelvic floor, breathing and movement so that you feel more informed and confident approaching labour and delivery.
Preparation isn't about guaranteeing a particular birth experience. Instead, we focus on giving you practical tools and an understanding of your body that may help you move and position yourself comfortably during labour.
We can help with:
-
pelvic floor relaxation and coordination
-
breathing strategies
-
pelvic and hip mobility,
-
perineal preparation where appropriate
-
physical preparation for delivery.

Rib, Hip & Sciatic Pain
Pregnancy-related discomfort isn't limited to your lower back. Changes in posture, movement, sleeping positions and the growing abdomen can contribute to pain around the ribs, hips, buttocks and legs.
Symptoms described as "sciatica" may have several possible causes, so a physiotherapy assessment can help determine whether your pain is related to the joints, muscles or irritation of neural structures and guide appropriate treatment.
We can help with:
-
rib and thoracic pain
-
hip pain
-
buttock pain
-
sciatica-like symptoms
-
muscle tension
-
nerve-related pain.

Abdominal & Round Ligament Pain
As your uterus grows, the abdominal wall and surrounding tissues undergo significant stretching and changes in load. This can sometimes cause pulling, aching or sharp discomfort around the abdomen, groin or pelvis, particularly when walking, rolling over, coughing or moving suddenly.
Physiotherapy can assess whether your symptoms appear musculoskeletal and provide appropriate treatment, movement strategies and support to make everyday activities more comfortable.
We can help with:
-
round ligament pain
-
abdominal wall discomfort
-
groin pain
-
muscular tension
-
movement-related abdominal pain.
Important: New, severe, persistent or unexplained abdominal pain during pregnancy should always be discussed with your obstetric healthcare provider to exclude non-musculoskeletal causes.
